about Suling WANG

Taichung (Taiwan), 1963

Suling Wang (b. 1963, Taichung, Taiwan) is a celebrated painter blending Eastern and Western influences. She earned her BA in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins, London (1997), and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London (1999). Honored by the Hirshhorn Museum in 2019 and awarded the U.S. Department of State’s Medal of Arts in 2023, Wang’s achievements mark her global impact. Her large abstract paintings, known for fluid brushstrokes and textured layers, explore identity and nostalgia, reflecting her upbringing near Taiwan’s Dajia River. Series like The Singing River symbolize her connection to her homeland, while Mountain Language pays tribute to her family, particularly her parents. Emotional “dots” in her work represent memories and loss, notably her mother’s passing. Wang’s art integrates Eastern perceptibility with Western abstraction, creating imaginative landscapes that bridge cultures. Her work is exhibited and collected worldwide, including by the Guggenheim Museum NY and MOCA Los Angeles, cementing her legacy in the international art scene.
