about Shih Yung-Chun
Taiwan, 1978
Shih Yung-Chun, a Taiwanese interdisciplinary artist born in 1978, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the National Taiwan University of Arts (2003). His diverse practice spans painting, photography, sculpture, literature, and installation, focusing on the mundane and ritualistic aspects of human life. Inspired by his upbringing in a military dependents' village during Taiwan's economic rise, he uses a surrealist approach to explore time's passage.
Shih blends two- and three-dimensional forms into a fourth-dimensional visual experience, employing techniques like rubbing, collage, and staining to create multi-dimensionality. His works reinterpret the ordinary with whimsical and fantastical narratives, evoking life's absurdity while challenging perceptions.
He has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows worldwide, including 'Breath Under Masks' (Shanghai, 2021) and 'Peter Pan Syndrome' (Taitung, 2023). His awards include Geisai Taiwan #3 (2011) and Geisai Taiwan #1 (2009). Shih’s works are part of major collections, including the White Rabbit Gallery (Australia) and Long Museum (Shanghai).
