Art Madrid'24 – Juan Sotomayor – Work on paper I (2020)
about Juan Sotomayor
Jaén, 1959
Born in Villanueva del Arzobispo, (Jaén) in 1959, he came to painting after abandoning his medical studies in Zaragoza, the city where he has lived since he was very young, where he began to paint and hold his first exhibitions, even presenting his work individually at the Palacio de la Lonja (1988), that same year he moved to Madrid and since then has held several national and international exhibitions. For some years now, Juan Sotomayor has been practicing a pure abstraction that is nourished by these syntagmatic elements with which he builds a language without external referents that is very effective on large fields of color; Divided into virtual horizontal stripes or openings in which a tone dominates, vertical lines appear that, as if following the natural trajectories of the drops that slide by the action of gravity, reveal other lighter tones that underlie the outer layer of paint; forming a filiform structure of a serial nature. The quality of the structure and the simplicity of the procedure are the factors that give forcefulness to these paintings that have unquestionable visual appeal.
