Art Madrid'24 – Enrique Zabala

Enrique Zabala

Valencia, 1966

A hyperrealist painter with a long artistic career, his work is inextricably linked to the pictorial tradition developed since the second half of the 20th century in Europe and especially in the United States.

His references combine interests from Pop Art with aesthetic concerns closer to Hyperrealism, without excluding sociological reflections derived from other pictorial schools. His works, generally clear and crisp in appearance, nevertheless delve into thematic and conceptual depths that place the human condition before a mirror. The resulting reflection is not what one might expect, as the stylistic sharpness of his paintings serves to further highlight the dual play of contrasts between what is displayed on the surface and what lies beneath.

First presented in the United States in 2014, the Las Vegas series integrates the characteristic landscape of its surroundings with the architectural transformation of this very habitat. The blinding desert light, so close to the city, finds its counterpart in the artificial lights of casino interiors, gaming machines, and their alluring signs, emulating a timeless and relentless fantasy. Seemingly banal scenes, with settings occasionally resembling photographic snapshots, are resolved into works of great formal complexity and refined technique. These traits become essential contributions to his artistic vision.

His work has been exhibited in numerous shows as well as major international art fairs and has earned him multiple awards, including the X Bienal Martínez Guerricabeitia Prize.
