Art Madrid'24 – Andrey Quintana Lamas

Andrey Quintana Lamas

Holguín (Cuba), 1984

Andrey Quintana is a Cuban artist who has exhibited his paintings both nationally and internationally. His art conveys profound messages, addressing serious issues such as violence and environmental concerns. Quintana describes his style as casual, incorporating multiple references to other artistic styles and historical artists. He works with unconventional materials, such as syringes and bullet casings, using acrylics on canvas or cardboard.

"Alive" originates from the repeated acts of gun violence reported daily worldwide. In this series, Quintana uses the bullet—an object of aggression—to create beautiful images, both to himself and others, by painting with its imprint. Through irony, he transforms an instrument of destruction into a tool for constructing beauty through art.

Human history is marked by difficult times of wars, deadly plagues, economic and existential crises, yet we have always persevered with optimism and resilience. The series "Renacer en el Páramo" (Rebirth in the Wasteland) reflects a state of mind born from personal experiences of overcoming crises. These works are infused with the energy of color and form, emerging from a process of releasing frustrations and stress after difficult times. Flowers become a metaphor for life, splendor, and beauty, while using a projectile to paint them symbolizes transforming negativity into a creative and constructive force for beauty.
